Paris' palette competes with L.A. duotone
The town is sort of a character in Night time in Paris, and deeply investigated costumes and decorations assisted recreate its past eras.Costume sketch for 'Midnight in Paris'Images were reduced to simple elements for black-and-whitened design on 'The Artist.'There's irony in the truth that while black-and-whitened aficionado Woodsy Allen imagined the lost generation in "Night time in Paris" with painterly color, French director Michel Hazanavicius traveled to La to render the romance of Hollywood's quiet era in black-and-whitened for "The Artist."When Allen and cinematographer Darius Khondji first talked about the feel of "Night time" -- which moves among present, the expat paradise from the '20s and also the Belle Epoque -- they considered both sepia tone and black-and-whitened to tell apart yesteryear, then scrapped it as being "too radical, an excessive amount of an impact,Inch and went rather for various color palettes.Khondji carefully matched using the other crafts artists. "We intentionally shot the current period having a better look," he states. Khondji also used half-century-old Cooke contacts to provide period moments "a static, classic look," and applied more backlight and direct answer to the heavier "almost porcelain" first step toward makeup supervisor Thi Thanh Tu Nguyen's palette, which compared the feel of women at Maxim's and also the Moulin Rouge."For that '20s, the makeup was trendy and feminine," Nguyen states. "Your eyes were made dark, the eye brows were attracted carefully into an arch, and also the lips were created right into a heart shape with lipstick. For 'La Belle Epoque' your skin was very pale and obvious. The makeup was discreet, the eye brows were attracted downward to provide a melancholy look."Khondji processed the negative to change the look "even much softer" that old-fashioned way, by flattening the contrast curve with Luxurious NY's senior DI colorist Joe Gawler. Gels and digital color timing imparted a subtle red glow. Yet "it is important, even when the look is altered in publish, to reveal it correctly," Khondji states.Costume designer Sonia Grande states she observes Paris' past "with similar fascination that youngsters observe a fish tank. This is exactly why these specific textiles, textures, gemstones and materials were selected: fragile, delicate and vulnerable, sometimes sophisticated, sometimes with sheen."Knowing ahead of time that the Woodsy Allen production would not be investing time or cash on publish effects, production designer Anne Seibel used the evening to cover public transit stops, traffic lights and signs and symptoms of contemporary Paris, disguising elements that wouldn't recede in to the darkness. Re-creating the Moulin Rouge was "hardest,Inch Seibel states, since the characteristic wooden floor and balconies no more exist. "Finally I discovered a concert hall that's quite modern but had a classic balcony." She scouted it with Khondji, illustrating together with her own sketches how it may be scammed, selling him and Allen around the idea. "Paris and it is miracle fortunate us," she states."The Artist" production designer Laurence Bennett had not labored in black-and-whitened before, though he appreciated reminiscences of Chaplin, Lumiere and Melies -- and modern good examples for example "Hud" and "The Final Picture Show." Throughout pre-production, he searched for guidance -- and received encouragement -- from British production designer Terence Marsh.Per Bennett, cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman designed a "practical decision" to shoot color film and process for black-and-whitened. "I was returning towards the roots in our craft. It had been a thrill to reside for the reason that world," Bennett states.Recognizing that creating in monochrome "has related to the decrease in the look to simple elements," Bennett examined designs, textures and shapes. "Missing color for separation, you depend on pattern and tonality to define planes inside the image."Younger crowd built contrast between your wealthy manses of quiet-era stars and moguls and L.A.'s shabby working class flats. As opposed to the lost L.A. that Bennett was seeking, costume designer Mark Bridges discovered that old fashion became new again -- or might be designed to appear new through the milliners at Western Costume. "You need to create conditions for that stars to reside in,Inch he states, "to allow them to imagine residing in as soon as.InchLinks also targeted in a delicate balance between your natural theatricality of glamorous art-deco L.A., reflected in dress motifs and designs similar to Chrysler-building chic, along with a daily realism that wouldn't take audiences from the story with annoying design. He used LeLuxe for '20s-inspired dresses. "Original dresses," he understood from experience, "break apart.InchMake-up department mind Julie Hewett, who'd first labored in on "The Great German," used monochrome monitors to preview her work, combating modern fashion. "We are designed for full lips," she states. "For the reason that era, the lips were squeezed and tight." Hewett knows the quiet face-up close-up, getting done Lillian Gish's last movie, "The Whales of August." "That have found me on 'The Artist,' " she states. Box Office Report: 'New Year's Eve' Ringing in the Holiday Early
Chris Hyde/Getty Images In the old days, superstar recording artists used to get together and warble for causes like humanitarian aid to Africa, world hunger and AIDS. Now a bunch of musicians and other celebrities are singing an ode to a popular file storage site that has often gotten under the skin of the movie and record industries.our editor recommends54th Annual Grammy Nominees: Kanye West, Adele, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Katy PerryTweeting With the Devil: How the Grammys Launched a Misinformation Campaign in 140 Characters (Opinion)Kim Kardashian Attends THR's Women in Entertainment BreakfastFoo Fighters' Six Grammy Nominations Put Analog Recording Back on the Map Move over Band Aid and USA for Africa. It's time for the "Megaupload Mega Song," from Will.i.am, P Diddy, Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Kanye West, Lil John, Jamie Foxx, Mary J Blige, Floyd Mayweather, The Game and more. Over a simple electro-beat, the various stars sing how much they love the service. Torrent Freak says the music video is a "stunning PR coup" for Megaupload, which has been attacked by the MPAA and RIAA. And on Friday the video was taken down from YouTube, a move that TechDirt says might be due to a copyright infringement claim from Universal Music Group. PHOTOS: 54th Annual Grammy Nominees The servicehas reportedly garnered Kanye West's support because it's "the fastest and safest way to send files," gotten Keys on board because it proves she's serious about music, and earned Snoop's endorsement because "it keeps the kids off the street." The Game adds that even his lawyers know he uses it, noting "...and I got plenty of them." Megaupload is based in Hong Kong and is run by a guy named Kim Dotcom (bornKim Schmitz). The company has only been sued one time in the United States for copyright infringement. In January, adult entertainment company Perfect 10 accused the company of encouraging users to upload its copyrighted material on the service. VIDEOS: The Best (and Worst) Moments of AMAs 2011 Many industry folks probably figured it would be tough to litigate against a company that operates outside U.S. jurisdiction and is cloaked in mystery, but Megaupload surprised Hollywood by responding to the lawsuit. In July, a federal judge turned down Megaupload's motion to dismiss the suit, finding: "Megaupload serves as more than a passive conduit and more than a mere 'file storage' company: It has created distinct Web sites presumably in an effort to streamline users' access to different types of media. It encourages and in some cases pays its users to upload vast amounts of popular media through its rewards programs. It disseminates URLS for various files throughout the Internet. It provides payouts to affiliate websites who maintain a catalogue of all available files and last at a minimum, it is plausibly aware of the ongoing rampant infringement taking place on its Web sites." In September, however, Megaupload settled the lawsuit with Perfect 10. Terms of the agreement haven't been revealed, but the parties submitted a motion so that the judge's July decision would be vacated. Awesome New Ghost Protocol Clips Online
It's Mission: Impossible once again!A few new clips from Mission:Impossible - Ghost Protocol have made an appearance online, nicely pairing the film's two primary components. In a single, action!Within the other, plotting! It's nearly as if Kaira Bird and team understand what makes this franchise tick. The very first clip was known to merely as GirlFight whenever we first got it - but it is nothing related to the Michelle Rodriguez film. Rather, it appears as an ad for great shampoo and conditioner might seem like when the blonde and also the brunette really, really hated one another's items coupled with vowed to wipe them in the face of the world. Additionally, it demonstrates that you could cause quite some time to damage and injuries even just in an allegedly limiting pencil dress. The 2nd clip was entitled "In The Outdoors"whenever we received it - try not to worry:that's does not mean it is a plaintive ballad sang by Cruise when his team abandons him to head off to dinner without him or something like that. No, this sees computer whiz, Benji (Simon Pegg), counseling Cruise's Ethan Search that the only method into [anything they have to enter into] is, well, in the outdoors. Search appears unwilling to accept this. Wuss. Mission:Impossible - Ghost Protocol has gone out on Boxing Day. We are greater than a little over-blown: what about you?
Pols float another anti-piracy plan
Experts of anti-piracy legislation pending in Congress have offered another plan to use trade laws and regulations and rules to combat rampant online breach overseas. The proposal, revealed Friday, would enable a copyright holder -- as being a studio or record label -- to petition the Intl. Trade Commission to create an analysis. The ITC could then problem a cease-and-desist order against a foreign website that provides unauthorized digital content or facilitates the importation of counterfeit goods. A purchase wouldn't compel payment processors and ad services to avoid offering support for the sites. The ITC also will need to uncover the foreign website is "mainly" and "willfully" taking part in breach of U.S. copyrights. The proposal was compiled by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Or), Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Clean.), Sen. Mark Warner (D-Virtual assistant.) and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), additionally to Repetition. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), Repetition. John Campbell (R-Calif.), Repetition. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Repetition. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), Repetition. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Repetition. Jared Polis (D-Colo.). The congress oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act in your home and sister legislation inside the Senate, the Safeguard IP Act, because both versions are specific at curbing so-referred to as rogue websites that operate overseas. Experts have mentioned the debts are written too broadly and could do injuries towards the technical infrastructure from the web in addition to threaten freedom of expression and innovation. The congress in the alternate plan mentioned inside their proposal that "by putting the controlling energy within reach of the world Trade Commission -- versus. a diversity of justice from the peace idol idol judges not familiar with Internet and trade policy -- will make certain a transparent process through which import policy is quite and consistently applied and many types of interests taken into account. In . They noted their proposal would essentially be stretching techniques the ITC already utilizes. "Everyone might be informed in the analysis and participants may have the authority to become heard, together with other your clients,Inch they mentioned in the statement. "Final ITC determinations may be be a huge hit in U.S. court." The newest proposal wouldn't supply the ITC the power to problem expedited cease-and-desist orders if emergency is proven, in addition to would prescribe sanctions for people who make an effort to abuse the equipment. The ITC wouldn't hold the energy to problem temporary and preliminary cease-and-desist orders. Organizations that follow the ITC orders might be given "appropriate immunity," the proposal pointed out. The Stop Online Piracy Act gets the backing of House Judiciary Committee chairman Lamar Cruz (R-Texas) which is scheduled get to a election on 12 ,. 15. A House Judiciary Committee aide mentioned the proposal to transfer jurisdiction of enforcement for the ITC "is a dramatic and pricey development of the federal government documents." The aide also noted the proposal omits language that "would require search engines like google like google, like Google, to close the 'importation' from the connect with a foreign rogue website," which might safeguard "ale crooks to hold onto make the most of search engines like google like google to market the robbery of yank intellectual property." The aide also noted the ranking part of the Senate Finance Committee, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), can be a sponsor in the Safeguard IP Act, which there's "no indication" the Finance or Ways & Means committees would advance the legislation. Star Trek 2 Warps In On May 17, 2013
Qq Abrams will shoot in 3DNow that Vital has finally switched the electricity at any height enough around the electrodes mounted on Qq Abrams' sensitive parts making him invest in pointing the Star Trek follow up, the pieces are gradually starting to fall under place. To begin with, the film might possibly not have a title yet, but it features a schedule, using the studio focusing on a May 17, 2013 release date using its torpedoes.Deadline reviews the professionals required quick action after The new sony shoved Roland Emmerich's Singularity off that date, homing in around the time slot and stuffing Kirk, Spock, Sulu and co into position. We assume it will be day-and-date right here, given that is what happened with the first. Now, obviously, it's as much as Abrams to create the one thing, working in the script he's been managing by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof (who tweeted this news with "You've strongly anxiously waited this lengthy... We shall do our best to really make it worth that wait.")The large news around the Trek front is the fact that Abrams is going to be which makes it his first stab at three dimensional filmmaking, meaning the Enterprise is going to be bending Directly Into The Face. Okay, hopefully not: Abrams knows what he's doing. But we're little worried about three dimensional lens flare burning our retinas out.In related news, there's still no official word on Benicio Del Toro signing on like a villain (Abrams is only going to cagily state that they are still in discussions) only one individual who will truly, truly be adding is composer Michael Giacchino. Yeah, attempt to look surprised.

'The Avengers' Poster Art Teases Marvel's Superhero Epic
Trying to figure out what will be nominated for a Golden Globe is a fool's game. It's like figuring out just how your crazy uncle will act at your house during the holidays. Piper Perabo is lovely and talented, but her nomination last year for best actress in a drama for USA's Covert Affairs was, let's say, a solitary voice among the shouts and murmurs of qualified candidates. (See also: Caan, Scott, for supporting actor in Hawaii 5-0) PHOTOS: 8 Possible Hollywood Targets for Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes But credit the Globes for two admirable trends: The awards are not afraid to be early adopters on quality shows -- witness The Walking Dead and Boardwalk Empire last year. Similarly, the HFPA isn't afraid to make the wild-card pick -- the one you didn't really consider but isn't, upon further review, such a bad idea after all. So, in the spirit of Globes' quirkiness, here's a selection of possible nominees: Best Television Series, Drama Boss (Starz) and Homeland (Showtime). Both deserve to be there, as they should for Emmy consideration, but both could be squeezed out by more conventional (but equally worthy) picks such as Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Justified and Game of Thrones. It wouldn't hurt to show a little respect to the overlooked -- like FX's Sons of Anarchy and HBO's Treme -- but I've got a sneaking suspicion that FX's American Horror Story is a more likely dark horse pick. PHOTOS: 'American Horror Story': Who's Who Best Actress in a Television Series, Drama Claire Danes seems the obvious pick here for Homeland. But fixing the Emmys' slight of Khandi Alexander in HBO's Treme and Emmy Rossum in Showtime's Shameless wouldn't hurt either. Katey Sagal of Sons of Anarchy winning in this category last year was a bright spot. Another pleasing dark horse would be Michelle Fairley for HBO's Game of Thrones. Best Actor in a Television Series, Drama Kelsey Grammer and Damian Lewis ought to be slam dunks for Boss and Homeland, respectively. But keep a light on for Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Wendell Pierce (Treme). Competition here will be, as expected, intense. PHOTOS: Who's Who on 'Game of Thrones' Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical Let the fresh blood and outcasts rise up -- Wilfred on FX, Enlightened on HBO, Raising Hope on Fox, Parks and Recreation on NBC and, hey, can we spare one (bleep, bleep, bleeping) second to raise our hands for FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Best Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical Jane Levy in ABC's Suburgatory has to be here, along with Laura Dern for her performance in HBO's Enlightened. Martha Plimpton should have been here last year for Raising Hope; Amy Poehler, too, for Parks and Recreation. But, see, those last two are obvious -- and the reason they weren't nominated is because, like the Emmys, the Globes have a fascination with exceptional dramatic actresses who get nominated for unfunny half-hour dramas. See: Falco, Edie. And hey, the show might still be finding its legs, but Christina Applegate in NBC's Up All Night would be a delightfully worthy choice. STORY: NBC Extends 'Up All Night' Best Actor in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical God only knows what's going to happen here, but Rob McElhenney from Sunny and Jason Gann of Wilfred might make this the best Globes in years. And put Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope) and Will Arnett (Up All Night) into the mix, shall we? Here's the thing about digging up overlooked talent on awards shows -- there are too many good picks. It's not like the Globes are going to right all the wrongs of the Emmys or, for that matter, the wrongs of the Globes themselves. No awards show is going to lard these nominations with brilliant but ignored actors, even if that would thrill us all. Hell, we haven't even talked about supporting roles or miniseries. How 'Tintin' Producer Peter Jackson Put New Zealand on the Map

Office Peter Jackson Helped West Memphis Three Defense Peter Jackson is walking down the familiar twisting lanes of the picture-perfect village of Hobbiton. Discussing the next day's shoot with the cast and crew of The Hobbit, he gazes up at the setting sun and appears overcome by a strange sense of deja vu. "I did this on this street 12 years ago, and it's exactly the same," says Jackson. "I don't feel the same, though." PHOTOS: 'The Adventures of Tintin' U.K. Premiere Blue Carpet Arrivals Jackson pauses to survey the village in Waikato that's familiar to millions of fans of the director's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Before Jackson and his crew transformed it into a little piece of Middle Earth, this was a simple New Zealand sheep farm. Now it's become a J.R.R. Tolkien tourist mecca, and five days into location shooting for Jackson's two Hobbit movies, it has been transformed again into a bustling film set. "With The Lord of the Rings, there was enormous pressure. There was a feeling that those films might not succeed," says Jackson. "Now, people have seen the Lord of the Rings movies, and they expect The Hobbit to be really something. The only thing I can do is make a movie I want to watch." PHOTOS: Stills From Steven Spielberg's 'The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn' Together, the two 3D films -- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, which Jackson is shooting back-to-back -- sport a budget of $500 million-plus and will employ about 3,000 people. But while the public focus is back on the Shire, the entire New Zealand industry, big and small, is reaping the benefits of what has become known as the "Jackson effect." COVER STORY: Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson: The Titans of 'Tintin' "In three years, we've had Avatar, The Adventures of Tintin, District 9, The Lovely Bones, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Yogi Bear, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the Spartacus TV series shooting here," says Graeme Mason, CEO of the New Zealand Film Commission. "Three of the four biggest directors of all time [James Cameron, Steven Spielberg and Jackson] were working in Wellington at the same time. Not bad for a town of 400,000 people." Gisella Carr, head of New Zealand's film locations office Film NZ, acknowledges that Jackson and his team are the creative sparks behind the country's film boom. But others, including the government, have helped make made-in-Kiwi cinema flourish, she notes. Film-friendly regulations -- like newly enacted labor laws that convinced Warner Bros. to keep Hobbit in New Zealand, alongside funding incentives and training schemes targeting high-end special effects technology -- have helped keep the LOTR momentum going. Employment for New Zealand's effects industry reached its peak during the shooting of Avatar, when about 900 people at Weta helped Cameron create the world of Pandora and its blue-skinned inhabitants. "If a film industry is what you want, then you have to compete," says Jackson. "If you want to be in the game, you have to pay. But the numbers have got to stack up. And what these films bring to the country and the employment ... they're formidable figures." While the immediate focus is on Hobbit and the next Tintin film, other international projects are set to start shooting in New Zealand in early 2012. Active discussions are under way with Cameron to return to the country to make an Avatar sequel. On the small screen, producer Rob Tapert is prepping the third season of Starz's swords-and-sandals series Spartacus in Auckland; Wellington-born director and Oscar winner Jane Campion will return to New Zealand to make a TV crime series, Top of the Lake, starring Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss; and Peter Webber will shoot the Japanese war drama Emperor in New Zealand in January. But while bigger international productions get most of the attention, Mason contends that the flow of talent through the country is benefiting local projects as well. This year has been a solid one for the domestic sector, with more than 22 local features released across a wide range of genres. The industry is still basking in the afterglow of the 2010 hit Boy, which earned more than $7 million at the local box office and about $43 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing New Zealand film to date. On the art house scene, Tusi Tamasese's low-budget Samoan-language feature The Orator won the top prize from Europe's art house cinemas association at this year's Venice International Film Festival. The story of an unassuming villager forced to defend his family and way of life, Orator marks New Zealand's first entry in the foreign-language Oscar race. Some of the higher-profile Kiwi features set for release in 2012 include Andrew Adamson's Mister Pip, starring Hugh Laurie, and the comedy Two Little Boys, featuring Bret McKenzie of The Flight of the Conchords and Aussie comedian Hamish Blake. To help get more local films made, the New Zealand government has changed its Screen Production Investment Fund, lowering the budget threshold for qualifying New Zealand productions from $4 million to $2.5 million per project. And to further fuel business coming out of the U.S., Film New Zealand and postproduction house Park Road Post will set up satellite operations in Los Angeles in January. "We see many opportunities," says Film New Zealand's Carr. "It's a buoyant time, and New Zealand has a strong hand to play. The craft, the innovations of the Hobbit films and the scale of the opportunity is delighting and stimulating New Zealanders again." Julia Johnson, who plays wolf pack alpha lady Leah Clearwater, agreed. She accepted the scene she's most excited for is "the last frame from the film. But that is all I am gonna say!" One factor we all do know? Edward and Bella's half-breed spawn -- the quickly growing Renesmee -- does achieve the walking-and-speaking stage within this movie. Actress Mackenzie Foy, who just switched 11, allow it to slip that people will indeed see her as Renesmee in 'Breaking Beginning Part 1.' Although, as her imprinter Jacob (a.k.a. Rachelle Lefervre) stated, "The majority of her [stuff] is available in 'Part 2,' but she comes with just a little appearance in that one. She's amazing -- I can not watch for people doing in 'Part 2' because she's really, really gifted." What exactly about this cliffhanger? We all know the Volturi are visiting set things in the actual vampire world, however when? "The Volturi do appear ultimately," leaking Charlie Bewley, who plays Demetri. "I am talking about, the actual finish. I am talking about, like, following the credits roll. So you've to keep on for your. However I can't watch for 'Part 2' ... I can not wait." And Christopher Heyerdahl, who plays Marcus, concurs. "The start of the film is alright, the center of the film is sort of interesting," he stated having a laugh. He's starring inside the horror comedySooner or later, virtually every comic here or across water-feature apparently decides that the things they demand to accomplish is switch to Proper Acting. Clint Eastwood's Brawl Lessons, and Other Revelations from the J. Edgar Press Conference
At the press conference for J. Edgar, which premiered last night at AFI Fest to mixed, often hilarious reviews, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer and Naomi Watts joined director Clint Eastwood, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and producer Brian Grazer fielded questions about the very issues that make the biopic seem difficult to make: the ambiguity surrounding both Hoover and his confidants’ personal lives. Movieline culled the best five quotes from the panel, one of which involves 81-year-old Eastwood’s on-set brawling. Leonardo DiCaprio and Clint Eastwood on bucking Eastwood’s reputation as a “one-take” director: DiCaprio: “At times we did eight or nine or 10 takes on a single day. Clint is very adaptable and has his process, and what he does is expect you to plant your feet and speak the truth like James Cagney says. That’s what we tried our best to do on this movie. He was very understanding about the different time periods we had to shift back and forth between.” Eastwood: “I’ve got this reputation of shooting one take, and it’s a wonderful reputation to have, but it’s hard to live up to. And if you did, it’d be kind of shoddy, I think.” Armie Hammer on Clint Eastwood directing — and demonstrating — his character’s impassioned scuffle with Hoover: Hammer: “There was a moment on set that was one of those things where you don’t smile. It was the fight scene that we had to do in the hotel room. Clint had to show us what he wanted, and that involved his buddy Buddy — Buddy Van Horn, who he’s [worked] with since Rawhide. Eastwood: “Yes. My memory’s a little short, but actually yes, I worked with him when I was a contract player at Universal in 1953.” Hammer: And they basically just had a fight right in front of us. Clint comes sauntering up and says, ‘You know, I was just thinking that this was a very important scene, so I was thinking for the fight you might want to do something LIKE THIS!’ And bam, bam, bam! These two guys just start wailing each other, rolling around the ground. Then Clint gets up at the end, dusts himself off, and says, ‘Something like that.’ Sure. Whatever you say.” Clint Eastwood on rediscovering and exploring a character he’d heard about his entire life: “I had impressions growing up of Hoover as a hero in the ’40s — actually the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and beyond. This was all prior to the information age, so we didn’t know about Hoover except for what was usually in the papers. This was fun, because it was a chance to go into it. Lance [went off] autobiographical material and biographies from other people, and it was fun to delve into a character you’ve heard about all your life but never really knew, and try to sort that out. We never knew too much about Tolson, Gandy or any of the close confidants. But through researching this movie, that’s what was fun about making the movie. You get to learn something about the people and watch the actors — we’re all just learning history or putting our stamp on history or our interpretation of it. I’m sure a lot of things probably didn’t happen the way they did in this film, but they’re pretty close.” Dustin Lance Black on figuring out the real J. Edgar Hoover: “This was a tough one to research. if you read any of the biographies on J. Edgar Hoover, you find they contradict each other more often than they agree oftentimes. They’re often told from kind of a political perspective; they feel like they have an agenda oftentimes. I guess first, you start identifying where they really disagree. You know there’s where you need to start poking first. For me, that means finding firsthand sources first. There aren’t a whole lot of those, but there are some. They’re mostly people who worked with Hoover in his older years. You start to get an impression of the man, which is important. Then going to Washington D.C. and walking in his footsteps […] seeing that he grew up blocks away from the Capitol building. In his childhood bedroom, you can see the dome just blocks away. That starts to inform things. “At a certain point you’ve read enough people’s biographies who might pass along firsthand accounts, and you start to come to conclusions about who the man was. And for me it was always important to answer that question of ‘Why?’ I know that this is someone who attained a lot of power. And he maintained that power for longer than he probably should have. I was so curious as to why. Most of my questions were always […] to answer that. I thought that’s how we’re going to make this into an emotional story. That’s how maybe we could learn from it — both from the good he did, and the bad he became. […] “It was a creepy feeling at times because I have hard feelings about so much of what he did. I started to empathize with him, and I started to feel for him. You start to question that and worry about that. But I would always stop myself and say, ‘If we want to stop this from happening again, we need to understand this from a human perspective; we need to understand that “why” in order to keep it from happening again.’ That really drove my research.” Naomi Watts on the unverified backstory of her character, Hoover’s secretary Helen Gandy: “Unlike Hoover’s character, there was very little information about Helen Gandy available. All we really knew is she worked with him for 50 years, she was not married, and then she devoted her life to her job. The rest sort of had to be filled in. These were questions of mine when I read the script for the first time — “Why would she do that?” This was not common for women at that time to go into a career saying, “This is all I want.” So she was ahead of her time. That’s an inspiration for all women to see a woman thinking and moving differently than those around her. I liked that it was set up in a way that perhaps she was going to be a love interest, but that just wasn’t who Hoover was [laughs]— wanting to please his mother. [Gandy] wanted that career and just went after it. She loved serving her country and making those sacrifices — and unbelievable loyalty.” [Photo from AFI Fest opening-night red carpet: WireImage]

Experts Size-up Third-Quarter Pay TV Customer Trends
NY - It has been fairly quiet inside the cord cutting debate recently, but third-quarter earnings season could change that as cable tv, satellite tv and telecom companies report their latest quarterly customer trends inside the future starting with AT&T on Thursday. When pay TV industry customer figures dropped the first time ever inside the second quarter of 2010, the started speaking about whether clients were cutting the cord for cheaper online options. A 130,000 drop inside the third quarter of a year ago, which adopted the second-quarter decline of 246,000 subs, made an appearance to ensure fears before two quarters of growth alleviated some fears. In this year's second quarter, pay TV operators lost 458,000 clients to complete the initial half at 100.millions of, according to SNL Kagan, with cable deficits as well as the first-ever satellite tv decline being only partially compensated out by gains for telecom leaders.Beginning third-quarter earnings season, experts have different sights, but agree that all things have enhanced over 2010 trends. Having a couple of searching at industry-wide figures while others at freely exchanged distributors' figures, some predict video customer gains, although some project a decrease, although in a few predictions that's less pronounced than around-ago period and definitely less pronounced than in the last quarter. Some on Wall Street expect the present problems by Netflix and third-quarter data to go away traders at ease with the pay TV industry's position. But Credit Suisse analyst Spencer Wang, whose team aided start the cord cutting debate a minimum of last year, mentioned in the report Wednesday: "We remain concerned around the secular basis about the risk of cord-cutting, given a tough economic climate for clients, consistent above-inflation increases in prices for the consumer, as well as the growing ease of access to less costly over-the-top (Internet-shipped) video services." Barclays Capital analyst James Ratcliffe predictions the big freely exchanged pay TV operators to report video internet adds of 105,000 around the cumulative basis, up from 11,000 around-ago period, "driven largely by smaller sized cable deficits." Satellite Tv "is predicted to become mixed bag, with strong gains from DirecTV due only to the promotion of free Nfl Sunday Ticket to new clients, offset by declines at Dish," he written in the report previewing earnings season. "Coming off a soft second quarter, we expect better customer performance inside the seasonally-strong third quarter with results prone to improve year-over-year," he earned obvious. "While material growth acceleration is difficult in our context of virtually zero occupied home growth, the cable/satellite sector has basically defensive characteristics, which we still see minimal evidence of cord cutting." Others also believe more fun round the cord cutting front. "Trends in cable are better versus a year ago, while trends in telecom and satellite are worse, that might temper the overall enthusiasm just a little,Inch mentioned Goldman Sachs analyst Jason Remedy. "Nonetheless, the consecutive rebound, with further improvement expected inside the fourth quarter, coupled with worries at Netflix should still calm cord cutting fears." Burns Tabak analyst David Joyce also layed out improving trends inside the latest quarter together with a restricted cord cutting effect. "With ongoing high unemployment and technology-driven cord cutting contributing to some small degree, there has been internet deficits inside the second quarter, which we expect enhanced internet deficits inside the third quarter," he told The Hollywood Reporter. He projects freely exchanged cable operators to report a 295,000 customer loss though while he includes smaller sized and individually-held companies within the predictions. That'll be a lot better than the 519,000 decrease around-ago period. While telecom giant AT&T and Verizon will boost subs, satellite tv trends will probably be weakened, and cable stands up better. Taking all this and small cable operators together, Joyce estimations that pay TV operators lost only 49,000 video clients inside the third quarter. While Joyce sees a little gain at DirecTV offset by Dish declines for your second small quarterly satellite tv sub decline back to back, Remedy needs that DirecTV will publish 150,000 U.S. customer additions, while competitor Dish will record a loss of profits of 75,000, which might put the satellite sector in growth mode. Remedy predictions total industry video internet deficits of 231,000, less pronounced in comparison to 491,000 deficits inside the second quarter, but greater in comparison to 153,000 deficits inside the third quarter of 2010. Footloose dances into secondThough it looked like this weekend was shaping up to be the clash of the '80s reboots over in America, Hugh Jackman and his battling 'bots ultimately won the bout as Real Steel scored $16.3 million to come out top of the charts for a second week. The remake of Footloose had to content itself with second place, earning $16.1 million. Hammond: Will Marilyn Monroe Finally Have An Oscar?
Is Marilyn Monroe finally headed towards that Oscar nomination that evaded her in her own all-too-video clip career? Within an odd twist of fate, yes. Using the World Premiere Sunday evening from the Weinstein Company’sMy Week With Marilyn (November 4) in the NY Film Festival another presumed honours contender has run out of the gate. And when I were Meryl, Glenn, Charlize, Viola or other lead actress Oscarhopeful I'd be quaking during my boots. Michelle Williams as Monroe isthat good. Sexy, vulnerable, fragile, alluring, sexy, delectable, complexand everything between she nails it and definitely has stated a place one of the top 5 otherwise front runner status for theOscar itself. She also flawlesslysings a few Monroe standards as bookends for that film.I caughtit Sunday evening in a small last-minute screening in Beverly Hillsides timed to coincide using its NY Premiere. The new sony Classics did exactly the same factor for Carnage if this opened up NYFF over the other day as Fox Searchlight did once the Tree Of Existence opened in Cannes. It can make us die-hardWest Coasters feel incorporated within the hooplaI guess. At the minimum it’ssmart Oscar strategy. An Academy acting branch member I spoken to later on was totallyunder Williams’ spell. The film directed by Britishtv producer/director Simon Curtis also works out to become top class stuff which ,perhapsalong with Night time In Paris,The Artist and also the Descendants is a ofthe most purely entertaining films I’ve seen to date this season. I'd imagine it'll have great appeal for the similar voters who went for Weinstein’s Best Picture champion The King’s Speech this past year but realisticallyprobably has its own best shots in performance plus some below-the-line groups like Costume Design and Art Direction. Critical appreciation most likely is dependent on age the critic. Individuals who don’t use thinking this really is about My Week With Marilyn Manson ought to be impressed. Additionally, it consists of another guaranteed Best Supporting Actor nominee in Kenneth Branagh’s biting and all sorts of-knowing interpretation of Laurence Olivier within the film concerning the relationship between Monroe and production assistant Colin Clark who labored for Olivier throughout the troubled manufacture of the 1957 comedy, The Prince And Also The Showgirl that the great actor also directed. Getting behaved and directed in Hamlet and Henry V much like Olivier it’s great to determine Branagh get to one's heart from the guy themself who thought his superstar qualifications could be increased showing up opposite Monroe simply to be completely annoyed by the entire trying experience or dealing with the insecure American celebrity. I must confess having seen some selectedfootage which was proven in the Weinstein party in Cannes last May I'd my doubts about Williams as Monroe but thoseconcerns were completely removed poor the whole film where she reaches show three noticeably different sides from the star without ever moving into impersonation.Ithink Williams haddoubtstoo when she was making the filmlast year in England. After I did a telephone interview together with her between takes to discuss her nominated submit Blue Valentine I requested about playing Marilyn but she fumbled with an answer andcould not articulate what it really meant then, similar to the real Monroewhen she was making thereal film-within-the-film.The whole ensemble cast with a terrific Eddie Redmayne within the pivotal role of Clark, Dominic Cooper, Judi Dench, Zoe Wanamaker, Dougray Scott, Toby Johnson and Julia Ormond may also figure for SAG’s Cast award as will the film within the Golden Globes Musical or Comedy groups where Night time In Paris still needs to be looked at the favourite. Monroe herself would be a Globeregular and actually won Best Actress inside a Comedy or Musical for 1959′s classic Some Enjoy It Hot. She seemed to be nominated within the same category for 1956′s Bus Stop but never handled to getANY type of Oscar recognition despite the fact that her co-stars both in individuals films, Jack Lemmon in ‘Hot’ and Don Murray in Bus Stop each gained Academynominations playing opposite her. You are able to’t really say it's due to the Acad’s desire not to nominate blondes or comediennes because Doris Day won her only Best Actress Oscar nom for Pillow Talk exactly the same year Marilyn was qualified for ‘Hot’. She was great in Bus Stop too with brilliant comic instincts but sadly the Academy didn’t meet up with her before her tragic dying in 1962. Now oddly Monroe and her unique appeal could figure strongly within the 2011 Best Actress race as channeled through Michelle Williams. Ironically Monroe did win some major recognition for Prince and also the Showgirl getting Italia’s Oscar, the David di Donatello award along with a British Academy Award nomination for the best Foreign Actress. In other West Coast rumblings about this New England film festival there's been much speculation about which “work happening from the masterfilmmaker scheduled to become launched this season ” will probably be the topic of NYFF’s mystery screening Monday evening at Avery Fisher Hall, just the second amount of time in their 49 year history. It’s certainly a great ploy for Oscar attention. Many of the speculating centers around Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar or Steven Spielberg’s War Equine or even the Adventures of Tintin but all individuals films are finished, not works happening at this time. One other popular guess is Stephen Daldry’s Publish 9/11 NY-set Very Noisy and extremely Close but fine like a director this three-time Oscar nominee is I don’t think the term “master” yet is applicable so scratch that. It may be the most recent from Wong Kar Wai or Zhang Yimou but neither of individuals films are positioned with this year yet, a minimum of in the usa. Some think it might be David Fincher’s The Lady Within The Dragon Tattoo however i know for certain nobody at The new sony understands if it's and apparently it might violate his deal if he used to do this by himself – very doubtful. That leaves an authentic “master” Martin Scorsese together with his work , the three dimensional Hugo from Vital, still “in progress” towards its November 23 holiday release. However a Vital source you never know this stuff suspected it had been the Daldry filmwhilestrongly showing it wasn’t Hugo adding , “Do you actually think Martin Scorsese would premiere his movie this way?” Well, yes. He required Gangs of NY Cannes seven several weeks before its December 2002 release and demonstrated twenty minutes from the “work happening”. Several sources “sworn to secrecy” will also be pointing to Hugo. Guess it’s a wait-and-see game until 7pm ET Monday. Nice method of getting people speaking in regards to you out here alternatively coast, NYFF! Finally, even when it didn’t melt away this area office ($10.5 million for that weekend), the well-examined George Clooney directed politicaldramaThe Ides Of March packed them in in the Academy of movement Picture Arts & Sciences Goldwyn Theatre in a Sunday 2pm matinee that came an believed 900, near-capacity. Response was stated to become warm , particularly for that stars stated a resource who stated they “liked it however it may have been too wise for that room”. Too wise for your room? It might not happen to be Bucky Larson: Born To Become A Star however i think they might most likely decipher it out.

George Clooney's 'The Ides of March': Exactly what the Experts Say
George Clooney does quadruple duty as star and director, in addition to producer and co-film writer within the political drama The Ides of March. The film also stars Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Philip Seymour Hoffman.our editor recommendsGeorge Clooney States He Will not Run For Office (Video)George Clooney Discloses How His Father Affected 'Ides of March' The film, which opened in August in the Venice Worldwide Film Festival and then performed in the Toronto Worldwide Film Festival, continues to be well-received by experts. It obtained 81% fresh reviews on Rotten Tomato plants. However, many major experts found themselves within the minority. The Hollywood Reporter's Deborah Youthful wasn't using the critical majority. She authored, "Had author/director George Clooney and the co-scripters Grant Heslov and Love Willimon injected The Ides of March using the intimate political conviction that made Night, and Best Of Luck a vital standout along with a leader for liberal patrons, the exit polls could be better about this political thriller juggling idealism and corruption with fairly foreseeable results." PHOTOS: Stars Who've Performed Political figures The La Occasions' Kenneth Turan wasn't an admirer, either. He authored, "The dialogue is wise and focused, so that as a director Clooney has urged his cast to actually tear in it. It's certainly including to determine the charming Gosling vocally spar with superb character stars like Hoffman and Giamatti. Still, despite the fact that all of the supporting aspects of an excellent film are here, the particular plot that things are in the service of is disappointing. The feel of reality and also the sheen of proper craft disguise this for some time, although not forever." The Chicago Sun-Occasions' Roger Ebert authored, "The film really discloses no new information. Since campaign managers shuffle between cable news shows and write their very own books, couple of secrets remain in smoke-filled rooms (and besides, hardly anybody smokes any longer). There isn't the sensation, as there is with Primary Colors or Nixon, that people may be obtaining the inside story on actual candidates. The Ides of March is much more concerning the character of contemporary media politics, and more youthful gamers who're other people to idealism. The film's strength is incorporated in the acting." A.O. Scott authored within the NY Occasions, "In some way, the film is missing both adrenaline and gravity, notwithstanding some frantic early moments along with a late swerve toward tragedy. It can make its points carefully and unimpeachably but doesn't bring much when it comes to insight or risk. Effective males frequently treat women as sexual toys and games. Reporters don't invariably get things right. Political figures sometimes lie. If some of that seems like news for you, you might well discover the Ides of March completely electrifying." Moving Stone's Peter Travers authored, "I've heard complaints that crushed idealism is hardly new in political drama. Point taken. But take greater than a general consider the Ides of March and also you'll understand that Clooney is hunting bigger game. He scratches the top of every of his problematic figures to discover once they first take their souls available on the market. What job doesn't that report to, especially now, in financial crisis?" I’ll start out with a few suggestions… · Hansel’s jealous ex (played by Cameron Diaz) tries to kill herself and Hansel in a car crash upon hearing about his new lover. Hansel escapes with disfiguring facial injuries. · Tom Cruise (played by Tom Cruise) challenges Hansel to a walk-off that goes horrible wrong when Hansel falls off the runway and is maimed. In the face. · Anticipating the onset of old age, Hansel attempts to have his face cryogenically frozen only to incur irreparable cryo-frostbite. Earlier this year, Stiller described the Zoolander sequel that he hoped to make a decade later: “It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe… it’s basically Derek and Hansel… though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he’s expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way.” Submit your best guesses about Hansel’s fate below! Playing opposite herself in several scenes, Torv got to turn the lights up on the differences between these two women and develop sides to the Bishop-less version that - gasp! - made us possibly like her even more than the one we have spent the last three seasons with. Dwarf Skit on E!'s 'The Soup' at Center of First Amendment Fight
Kevin Winter/Getty Images A few years back, E!'s comedy clip show The Soup featured a brief spoof ad for any imaginary TLC reality reveal that ended up being to be named Fertile Little Inked Pageant Parents Who Enjoy Baking. The concept ended up being to aggregate the looniest yet constantly popular reality TV memes together, therefore the Soup required a photograph of achondroplastic dwarves and changed the look to incorporate outlandish elements, including 27 children, a lot of whom had matching tats and were putting on lingerie over their clothing. The show is facing a legitimate threat in the dwarves who have been proven throughout this segment. The suit in Philadelphia is rapidly developing right into a test of whether an indicator that somebody warrants a crazy reality Television show should receive First Amendment protection like a parody. Cara and Gibson Reynolds, a dwarf couple, say their photo was apparently ripped from an AP article in regards to a pretty serious subject: the ethical limitations in permitting parents to produce "perfect" babies. Within the article, the Reynoldses were cited as saying, "You can't let me know which i cannot possess a child who's likely to seem like me. The pair prosecuted Comcast, E! Entertainment, and Soup host Joel McHale with claims of defamation, misappropriation of likeness, false light invasion of privacy, illegal enrichment, and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. On Thursday, Michael Berry, the attorney representing Comcast, wasin a Philadelphia court so that they can obtain the suit ignored. The skit "might have been crass, might have been juvenile, might have been tasteless ... however it's not actionable underneath the law," Berry told a judge, based on Courthouse News Service. Comcast contended that recommending someone ought to be on the reality show isn't defamatory, and pointed tothe Top Court's famous decision inHustler Magazine v. Falwellwhere the justices all ruled that the cartoon picture of Reverend Jerry Falwell inside a drunken incestuous rendezvous together with his mother was parody, and therefore protected through the First Amendment. "This piece is pure fantasy," stated Berry, adding that no actual details concerning the Reynolds were broadcast. "Whether you refer to it as parody, comedy or simply a poor joke, nobody would take this seriously concerning the Reynolds." In reaction, Herman Weinrich, a lawyer for that couple, contended that his clients, unlike Falwell, weren't celebs, that there is an implied suggestion the dwarf couple made "their living by taking advantage of their kids,Inch which the mere realization they they're dwarves "shouldn't make sure they are the item of ridicule, of scorn and contempt." The situation boosts lots of issues: Who exactly is really a public estimate age reality television? Does giving a job interview and saying yes to become captured pics of turn private people into limited politicians? Forever? So that as television is constantly on the go the length in searching for the bizarre, what is ripe for parody? Heck, what's parody anyway?
